Shri Mayureshwar (or Moreshwar) Ganpati temple is one of the Ashtavinayakas (Eight sacred Ganapati temples) in Maharashtra. It is located in Morgaon Village in the Pune District of Maharashtra state. It is around 60 kilometers via Jejuri-Morgaon-Baramati Road and Saswad – Bopdev – Pune Road.

The young Ganesha was fond of climbing trees. One day, he accidentally knocked off an egg, from which a peacock emerged. Therefore, this Ganesha idol is seen riding a peacock. Therefore, he is called ‘Mayureshwar.’ After finishing the task of slaying the demon, Bhagwan Ganesh offered his Vahan peacock to his brother Bhagwan Kartikeya.

Architecture Of Mayureshwar Ganpati Temple

The architecture of the Mayureshwar Ganpati Temple is unique. It is surrounded by a tall boundary wall made of stones. Also, there are four minarets at the four corners of the temple. There are four gates on the four sides. Legends say that these gates symbolize four Yugas.

The main entrance of the temple faces north. On the premises, there are two lamp towers or Deepstambhas. There is a 6-feet tall mouse sculpted in front of the temple. One peculiar thing about this temple is that there is a huge Nandi in front of the Ganesha Temple. It is an unusual sight as Nandi is normally found in front of Bhagwan Shiva’s temples.

Morya Gosavi (fondly called Moroba) was a prominent saint of the Ganpatya Branch. Saints of this branch worship Bhagwan Ganesh with full devotion.

He established the Ganesha temple called Mayureshwar ashtavinayak, which got patronage from Great Peshwas. Since Ganesha was the KulDaivat of Peshwas, they did a lot to revive and flourish all Ganesha temples in Maharashtra, including Mayureshwar.

There is a legend associated with the Mayureshwar Temple or morgaon cha Ganpati. According to that, Bhagwan Ganesha was born in the Treta Yuga in the caves of the Lenyadri. Ganesha took the form of Mayureshwar with six arms and rode on a peacock. The incarnation was to vanquish Sindurasur. Since he was riding on a peacock, he was called Mayureshwar. After completing the work of slaying Sindurasur, Bhagwan Ganesha gifted the peacock to his brother Bhagwan Kartikeya.

One is in the Magha Month of the Hindu calendar. On the fourth day, the birthday of Bhagwan Ganesh is celebrated. Thousands of devotees gather at the temple to pay their respect to Bhagwan Ganesh. A procession, which is called Palkhi, is held on the occasion.
